Course programme:

Crystallography of surfaces, surface reconstructions, surface energy, equilibrium shape, growth mode, crystal surfaces, grain and interphase boundaries, special boundaries, structural models, grain boundary energies, interaction of grain boundaries and crystal defect (vacancies and dislocations). Grain growth and recrystallisation. Change of grain boundary structures during heat treatments, grain boundary phenomena. Phase boundaries, atomic matching. Misfit concept. Formation and geometry of misfit dislocations. Coherent, incoherent phase boundaries, epitaxy endotaxy. Multilayers, structural characteristics of monolayers, structure of small amorphous and crystalline grains. Experimental methods: AES, ESCA, Tunneling microscopy, TEM, sample preparation.
