Course programme:

Fundamental equations of interfacial thermodynamics. Excess quantities. The Gibbs adsorption equation.

Laplace-equation, Kelvin-equation. Capillary condensation, Ostwald-ripening.

Experimental methods for the study of L/G, S/G, S/L and L/L interfaces: measurements of adsorption isotherms (S/G and S/L) and interfacial tensions (L/G and L/L).

Conditions for the formation of emulsions and microemulsions. Winsor-type microemulsions.

Preparation and properties of activated carbons and mesoporous silicates. Pore size distribution and capillary condensation.

Adsorption microcalorimetry at S/G and S/L interfaces.

Size-dependent properties in the colloidal domain. Optical, magnetic, semiconductor and catalytic properties of nanoparticles.

Synthesis strategies and preparation methods of monodisperse nanoparticles.

Characterization methods of nanoparticles and nanostructures. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning-tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), quartz-crystal microbalance (QCM), Langmuir-balance (LB).
Molecular self-assembly and self-organization. Two-dimensional ordered nanostructures. Langmuir- and Langmuir-Blodgett films.
